Commenting on the announcement that HMP Noranside is to close, Liberal Democrat Justice spokesperson Robert Brown MSP said:
"This was the worst kept secret in justice circles.
"The staff knew it, the prisoners knew it and anyone who visited the prison knew it.
"Yet Government spin doctors dismissed rumours as "groundless" and the Justice Secretary refused to answer my questions about Noranside at the Justice Committee.
"The reality is that even long term prisoners eventually get released. It is in the public interest that we have the best arrangements in place to stop them reoffending or hurting individuals. The open estate is a crucial part of this. The SNP Government will be making a big mistake if they needlessly close it. This would be a significant risk to public safety."
