Commenting on the announcement by the Health Secretary that she will cut the number of student nurses and midwives courses, starting next year, Liberal Democrat Health spokesperson Ross Finnie MSP said:
"Liberal Democrats understand the pressures that NHS boards across Scotland are currently facing.
"However the Cabinet Secretary must ensure the places she is proposing to cut are based on effective work force planning.
"In difficult financial times, there is much that can be done to cut waste and high pay in the NHS in an effort to maintain the numbers of nurses in Scottish hospitals.
"Liberal Democrats want to see this approach rather than cut frontline services."
