Commenting on the SNP's claims that they're standing up for students, Liberal Democrat Education spokesperson Margaret Smith said:
"This is rank hypocrisy from the SNP who went into the 2007 election promising to dump the debt and instead dumped students.
"Let's not forget that it is the SNP who are cutting the higher education budget in Scotland. In fact, higher and further education is taking a greater share of the pain than most other departments.
"That's a direct consequence of choices made by Michael Russell and the SNP.
"The SNP is quite right, Labour introduced fees and top up fees despite a manifesto commitment. But Scottish students will remember how badly they have been let down by this SNP Government in Scotland."
