Liberal Democrat Justice spokesman Robert Brown says that training and work opportunities are the best way to stop reoffending in Scottish jails.
Commenting after questioning Alex Salmond at First Minister's Questions, Robert Brown said:
"Evidence has shown, time and time again, that providing prisoners with skills training and work opportunities is key to stopping reoffending.
"We know that only a third of prisoners take part in education in jail and not enough of them are working.
"Prisoners should be doing something useful with their time inside.
"The best way for offenders to spend their time inside is to work while in jail.
"For less serious offences community sentences where offenders repay their debt to society are preferable to short prison sentences which simply do not work."
