Commenting in response to a letter from the president of NUS Scotland to Tavish Scott, Scottish Liberal Democrat Education spokesperson Margaret Smith MSP said:
"Universities and colleges are devolved - they are the responsibility of the Scottish Parliament.
"There are no tuition fees in Scotland and no graduate contribution thanks to the votes of the Scottish Liberal Democrats in the Scottish Parliament.
"Scottish Liberal Democrat MSPs voted to abolish tuition fees that Labour imposed on Scotland.
"MPs have to work out what's right for English Higher Education.
"Scottish Liberal Democrats are focused on Scotland and a Scottish solution for Higher Education and Scotland's students."
