Jim Hume, Liberal Democrat MSP for the South of Scotland, has expressed disappointment and sadness at the news that Gala building firm, N&J Graham Ltd, has had to cease trading resulting in 20 redundancies.
Jim Hume MSP said:
"This is sad news not least because N&J Graham was a well known and established business, and 20 job losses is a significant number.
"I hope that with the assistance on offer from PACE, staff members are able to find alternative employment or retraining.
"It does however highlight the difficulties even well run and established businesses are facing in the current recession."
Commenting, Michael Moore, MP for Berwickshire, Roxburgh and Selkirk, said:
"The fact that such a long-standing firm has been forced to cease trading provides clear indication of the scale of the difficulties that the economic downturn is causing for our local businesses.
"The immediate priority must be to provide all necessary support for those who have lost their jobs; beyond that, retraining employees to improve their employment prospects will be futile unless the Government takes action now to protect jobs across the economy as a whole."
